What are essential routines that make your home saturated with Christ? In today’s society, saying you’re a Christian doesn’t always mean you’re living for Christ. (Read my post on Who Is Your God? to hear a short testimony on that) So let me share a list of ten things to be doing if you want to grow your faith and have a more intimate relationship with the Lord. These are merely suggestions to apply to your day to day–and I share them in hopes it will spark something new with you in your faith journey. These are things I’ve learned in my own walk to grow a deeper relationship with God. Also, this list is in no particular order besides number one; oh and number nine is a good one too!
1. Read your Bible
This one may seem obvious; however, a lot of people are relying on their own knowledge and hearsay of what they think the bible says instead of picking up the living Word of God and actually sitting down to read the scriptures. Don’t be mistaken by only listening to commentaries or podcasts that reference scripture without actually sitting down and reading His Word yourself. Although those things are helpful and are on this list too, don’t solely invest into someone else’s thoughts without putting God’s Word first and foremost.
2. Spend time in prayer
Prayer is something I’ve been growing in over the years. After meeting my husband, he led me in prayer through morning and evening times–showing me that prayer in the morning before leaving your house and starting your day is something that should be done. Don’t wait until you go to bed to say your prayers. Wake up with a renewed spirit and give your praise and prayer to the Lord as you begin your morning. Then, as the day goes on, continue to be in prayer. Whether you are rejoicing on the way to work because a song comes on and gives you a spiritual tug, or you get frustrated with your kid and need to call on God in prayer for patience, or you are battling with an addiction and need the Lord to deliver you from temptation, or any situation that you want to pray about. And as always, remember to pray for your meals! The Lord blessed you with what you have and we should give thanks. On the contrary to this, Satan doesn’t want us praying. What spiritual walk does a believer have if they barely pray? I believe there was a study done that said the average amount of time a person prays throughout the day is five minutes. I have been guilty of that little prayer in my own life, but have steadily been growing with more prayer time–so let’s draw closer to the Lord and pray without ceasing like His word tells us!
3. Worship music
When saturating your home with Christ, a simple thing you can do is turn on worship music. Either be intentional about singing along to it, or play it in the background. Either way, you are bringing glory to God with worship in your home. Be mindful of the songs and artists of the Christian music genre, though. Not all of it is created to glorify God. Listen to the lyrics and make that discernment yourself. We love this YouTube playlist, especially the first song!
4. Praising the Lord
Do you go about your day praising the Lord with your voice? If not, you should definitely start if you want to saturate your home with Christ. The more you speak and call upon the Lord, the more He will draw near to you. His word says, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you” (James 4:8 NKJV). Singing worship music or words of praise as you go about your day is essential. Praising the Lord can also look like praying throughout the day, too. “Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised” (Psalm 145:3 NKJV).
5. Listening to sermons, wise council, bible commentaries
Another thing to add into your household day to day is listening to a sermon, listening to a biblically aligned podcast that brings encouragement and education to your Christian walk, or reading/listening to bible commentaries. Each of these resources can be great to incorporate into your home when paired with reading and referencing your Bible. Check out these 5 Book Recommendations for Christian Mamas.
6. Go outside in nature
How often do you get outside in your day? I’m talking about intentionally walking outside to get fresh air after waking up or building in time to take a walk in the afternoon or evening. Watch the sun rise, admire the sunset, observe the trees swaying in the wind, look at the billowy, white clouds, or survey the constellation of the dark night sky. All of these parts of nature glorify God, as He is our Creator. Being in nature and praising His work will also saturate your home in Christ.
7. Scripture memorization
Knowing the living Word of God and being able to pull scripture from your memory is vital in the Christian walk. Memorization is something I’ve steadily grown in over the years, and you can only do that by reading your Bible. Take time to lay God’s word on your heart and in your mind to memorize verses. As this will help you stay grounded in truth. Ephesians 6:10-20 speaks about the armor of God which are great verses to encourage you to equip yourself with scripture.
8. Walk in the fruit of the Spirit
The fruit of the Spirit is found in Galatians 5:22-23, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” All of these characteristics are qualities of someone who wants to saturate their home with Christ. When you embody these character traits, you are growing to be more Christ-like; which is all a part of our sanctification. Walking in the Spirit is how we should live out our Christian walk, not fulfilling the lusts of the flesh (Galatians 5:16).
9. Keep track of your Bible time
I cannot emphasize this point enough! For almost two years now, we’ve been keeping a tally on our refrigerator calendar of mine and my husband’s bible time. You put a check mark on the calendar for the day if you spent time reading your bible (typically ten minutes is the average, but it may be longer or slightly shorter–just reading one verse and calling it a day isn’t gonna count to get a checkmark in my opinion–but then again, some people may think ten minutes isn’t long enough!) The accountability that we have from keeping track and then tallying up the total for each month is great discipline. We look back on our month and can see how spiritually filled and moved we were–or if we were lacking in the Word and our reflection of reading that month was evident from it. Like I said, this is a great discipline tool to keep track of and encourage one another in getting our bible reading time in.
10. Prayer journal/notebook, bible studies
The last thing on the list to saturate your home with Christ is to have a prayer journal/notebook to write down your prayers and thoughts to God. I have prayer journals that date back to 2017, and it’s amazing to see how I’ve grown in my faith and all the answered prayers along the way. Our God is so good and faithful. And of course, there are still prayers in my current notebook where God has either said, “no or not yet” –which is why we keep on praying! In addition to your bible journal/notebook, I added bible studies to this point. Bible studies through your church or an online ministry are a great way to go out and fellowship with like-minded believers and then bring that knowledge and wisdom you learned back into your home. I highly recommend joining a bible study that will help grow your faith, which will in turn continue to saturate your home with Christ.
