Mom Chat: Check Yourself

This blog post is brought to you in part of having a mom moment. The not-so-pretty type where the flesh slowly starts taking over, and before you know it you’re fuming with frustration and having little to no patience towards your children. I can’t stand myself when I get worked up like that. Let me say that again: I can’t stand myself! What a conviction of the heart after my attitude has shifted for the worse towards my children–and for what reason? Because my three month old is gassy and keeps crying, while my eighteen month old keeps repeating ‘water’ over and over again as she holds out an open-lid cup that’s already been spilled all over the counter and floor. Oh, and while this is happening I’m trying to finish getting my muffin mix scooped into the pan and into the oven before my littlest’s next nap–another reason she was probably crying. Whatever the scenario may be, it sent me over the top for no reason except for my own lack of impatience. My children do not deserve that character from me. Hence, this blog post to share to myself and to other mamas out there: check yourself.

As a follower of Christ, I have the Holy Spirit living inside of me which helps me to walk in the spirit and live by the spirit. However, that doesn’t mean I’m not a sinner by nature who needs the love and mercy of Jesus and the living Word of God to help me live out this life with obedience and worship to the Lord. I can’t just walk around acting out in bitterness and malice without feeling convicted of my wrongdoings–my spirit will genuinely not let me! Mamas, lean into these convictions when you feel you have acted wrong to your children (or to your spouse!) You need to check yourself. Repent and ask for forgiveness from our Heavenly Father, and humble yourself to ask for that same forgiveness from your children (or spouse). Imagine showing your children that kind of humility–no matter what age they are.

Check yourself in the sense that you’re able to recognize what the trigger is, especially if these not-so-pretty type of mom moments seem to happen over the same spilt tea, if you know what I mean. Take heed and listen to the Spirit convicting you before your flesh starts to take over. It’s not fun when you’re left feeling remorseful over your own sinful nature again. Overcome your flesh, which keep in mind, is in constant battle with the spirit. Call upon the Lord for strength and guidance. Remember: Your children are your greatest blessing. They are sinners in nature just like you and me. Remind yourself of that when they act out towards you or purposely misbehave. And remember mamas, check yourself first.
