There’s an old children’s bible song that goes like this:
O be careful little eyes what you see
O be careful little eyes what you see
For the Father up above
Is looking down in love
So, be careful little eyes what you see
The next verses say be careful little ears what you hear, then be careful little tongue what you say, be careful little hands what you do, be careful little feet where you go, be careful little heart whom you trust, and lastly, be careful little mind what you think. This rudimentary hymn that’s sung by children is a great reminder for us as adults.
My husband came across a Christian kid’s music playlist for our girls on YouTube that was singing this song, and it resonated with me to write this blog post. There’s so much wickedness in this world–almost everywhere you turn you are seeing something perverted, obscene, or crude. And that’s the same thing with what you hear too–whether it’s through the radio, music platforms, advertisements, or television. My encouragement to you through this post is that just because it’s there doesn’t mean we should watch it or listen to it. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 6:12, “All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful” (NKJV). As a follower of Christ, I am convicted by the Holy Spirit towards this. In my walk with the Lord, He has given me wisdom in this area over the years to understand that just because we have access to certain shows, music, and things on social media apps doesn’t mean we should use it.
Let me just lay it out clearly and directly. Watching sexual or nude scenes in movies and listening to secular songs full of curse words is not what I want my eyes to see, nor my ears to hear now that I’m walking with the Lord. It’s been a process of conviction over the years for me to get to how I currently feel about not allowing that perversion into my mind, or into my home for that matter. The same thing goes for horror movies, anything with witches, demons, vampires, and even certain cartoon shows and kids movies for my children. Let me say this: I wasn’t always like this. I fell prey to these worldly and secular things in our media at other times in my life, but God. But God! He is the one who opens your eyes to wisdom, righteousness, and holiness. Once your eyes have been spiritually opened to His goodness, then your spirit will be in opposition to many things that go on in the fallen world we live in.
Proverbs Chapter 4 speaks on wisdom. Let me drop a couple verses from it, and you can take a look at the rest yourself. The last verses resonate with the children’s hymn I started with.
Proverbs 4:5-6
5 “Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth.
6 Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you.”
When it writes ‘her’ in these verses, it is referring to wisdom.
Proverbs 4:13-14
13 “Take firm hold of instruction, do not let go; keep her, for she is your life.
14 Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the way of evil.”
Proverbs 4:20-27
20 “My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings.
21 Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart;
22 For they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh.
23 Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.
24 Put away from you a deceitful mouth, and put perverse lips far from you.
25 Let your eyes look straight ahead, and your eyelids look right before you.
26 Ponder the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established.
27 Do not turn to the right or the left; remove your foot from evil.”
It’s so important to keep your eyes turned toward Jesus in this chaotic culture we live in. Being a follower of Christ means we pick up our cross daily and follow Jesus. When I turn on my television, I need to already be on guard of what commercials and advertisements might arise. I need to be selective over what movies and shows I choose. I need to fight against my flesh when it wants to put on a certain show that’s trending, but I know the content is inappropriate. Be selective over who you follow if you’re on social media–or completely opt out of the platforms like Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok like I have! (Once again, I used to use all of those things, but over the years the Lord has convicted me to stay off)
Regardless of where you are in your walk with Christ, I hope this post has encouraged you in some way to guard your eyes and guard your ears with the content you are consuming on a daily basis and what you allow in your home. Be blessed, mamas!
