Becoming A Mom

Tears and joy were the first two things I experienced after giving birth to my daughter. What a miraculous gift it is to become a mother. It’s a blessing to be able to grow a child in our bodies and give birth to the precious life that you carried for nine months. To see the life that God created in your womb come forth into this world for the very first time. Tears and joy, mamas. It’s an unexplainable emotion what it feels like becoming a mom for the first time.

As most of you know, I’m a mama to two little girls though. The same tears and joy happened for both of my births. It’s like you become a (new) mother all over again when the second one is born. I think it’s safe to say that feeling never goes away when you push forth life out of your womb each time. There’s so much weight on us as mothers. The baby weight, for starters (lol) –but also the weight of becoming a mom, or parent need I say for any dads reading this. However, the touch of a mother is something a baby feels different from that of a father. Moms and dads, men and women, were created differently for a reason. The bible is quite clear about that.

Mother: nurturer, caregiver, love, affection, comfort

There really is something as ‘the touch of a mother.’ Our littlest is almost five months old now. She knows who mama is and who papa is. It’s in our touch. When my husband picks her up to try and soothe her, I’d say he accomplishes the task three out of five times. No matter what baby girl tries to do, those other two times are only successful when I step in and offer my touch. She stops crying. Instantly. Do you realize what kind of bond a mother has with her child?

When you hold your baby, rock your baby, feed your baby, or watch those little eyes fall to sleep–it should remind us of the weight we carry as mothers. We are responsible for the very life we brought into this world. We must make sacrifices day in and day out. I’m reminding myself of that as I write this, especially raising two under two right now. I don’t always have time to get the things done that I had planned. Instead, I make the sacrifice to pick up my crying baby to give her attention instead of finishing the task I started.

Before you even think about becoming a mom, it’s important to realize that your life will quite literally never be the same–for all of the right reasons. Becoming a mother changes you. Let it change you for the better as you navigate becoming a mother once you’ve had your first child. Make motherhood into a joyful and beautiful journey. Find your purpose in motherhood. We need more mamas stepping up into their role as mom–not the nanny or daycare worker. YOU, the mother. Becoming a mother is not for the faint of heart. Go forth with purpose and passion as the nurturer and affectionate woman that God made you to be.

Be blessed, mamas.
