We’ve Been Busy…

It’s been a minute since I’ve made time to sit down to write over these last two weeks–and I realize it’s because we’ve been busy! There have been several new things that have been going on around the Yevsin household. Let me give you a spoiler: fellowship, bread, and chicks.

My husband and I joined a small group bible study for couples that meets every other Friday night. All I have to say is hallelujah! God has been moving in our life answering prayers for friendships. This small group through our church was just the beginning. It’s amazing how Spirit-filled you can get when you’re worshiping and talking about God with like minded believers. Feeding my Spirit over my flesh has been on my mind over the last couple of weeks. We are called to walk in the Spirit, not fulfilling the lust of the flesh (Galatians 5:16). Does that mean we’re perfect and never sin? Of course not! We are born sinners (Psalm 51:5). But walking in the flesh does not please God. We should not be habitually sinning. We should be seeking the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22) and walking in the Spirit. The women’s bible study I’m in that meets weekly is another outlet to hold myself accountable to staying in the Spirit. We are doing our study on God’s holiness, and wow, talk about much needed. Joining bible studies to dig deeper into the Word of God and having that Christian fellowship has kept us busy over the last couple of weeks.

The second thing that’s been occupying little bits of my time is creating my very own sourdough starter from scratch! If yall know me, then you know this was on my 2024 Vision Board for the year. I’ve been wanting to jump on the sourdough bandwagon since last year, and I always wanted to do it from scratch—meaning I wasn’t going to accept anyone giving me a little of their own starter to get the process started. I wanted to build the yeast all on my own. It’s been cold here since it’s winter in the Carolinas right now. Yeast does better in the warmth. I’m not going to crank my heat up to 74 degrees just to help my starter out lol, so the first two weeks were a little rough to get the yeast going. Thanks to a sweet friend of mine, she suggested I put the starter jar in the oven with the oven light on. I didn’t believe that the oven light radiated much heat until my husband measured the temperature and it was in the 90s! After I did that and switched up the flour I was using–voila! I had a working starter to bake with. I’ve made two loaves as of now, with one in the works to get started tomorrow. It’s quite the timely activity, but a very rewarding one at that.

The last thing that’s been going on in the Yevsin household is that we got baby chicks! I can’t believe it. I literally have baby chicks living in my garage, all cozied up in their brooder right now. Getting chickens was actually another thing on my 2024 Vision Board that I wanted out of this year. Woot, woot! Get ‘er done, son. I did extensive research on all my chicks before getting them. Ask my husband. I was basically quizzing him on the types of chickens I was planning for us to get from the hatchery. The hatchery we got our chicks from was almost a three hour drive from our house. We woke up early one Sunday, loaded the girls in their carseats with their pjs still on, and drove out while the sun was coming up. It was truly a delightful, little road trip with my family. I had us make a pit stop when we were about thirty minutes away from the destination to eat brunch at a place called Tupelo Honey. Phenomenal food. Then, we realized we didn’t bring our toddler any shoes with us lol, so we had to make a stop at Target too. After that, it was chick time! We got our chicks from Little Birdie Hatchery in Wake Forest, North Carolina. It was such a quick and smooth operation that before I knew it we had our six chicks in their cardboard box and we were driving back home. The types of chickens I picked out for us were two Buff Orpingtons, one Speckled Sussex, one Golden Laced Wyandotte, one Austrolorp, and one Barred Rock. I think they are going to be a great flock to start with.

Praise the Lord for chickens, sourdough bread, and a wonderful Christian community! Til next time mamas, sisters, and friends. Drop a comment below if you relate to any of this content–especially with the chickens!
