You Should Be Asking God For Wisdom

Whether you consider yourself a seasoned Christian, or a babe yearning for milk, I think it’s safe to say we should all be asking God for wisdom. Wisdom is a quality that is heavily mentioned throughout the bible. Wisdom is the ability to discern, to perceive words and understand, to gain knowledge, and to receive instruction. Let’s look at a story from 1 Kings.

Solomon had recently become king after his father, David, died and bestowed the kingdom to him. One night, the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream and he asked the Lord for wisdom. He specifically asked for: “an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil” (1 Kings 3:9). Now, almost all of us sitting reading this right now aren’t kings in control of thousands and thousands of God’s people. However, the point remains the same. Solomon asked God for wisdom. He asked God that he may “discern” between good and evil. God’s response is what got me. It’s written in verse 10, “The speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.” Praise be to God! Wisdom and the ability to discern is something very pleasing to the Lord. The Lord continues and says, “behold, I have done according to your words; see, I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has not been anyone like you before you, nor shall any like you arise after you” (v. 12).

I’m sure you’re familiar with the book of Proverbs that is chalked full of wisdom and knowledge. Well did you know that it was Solomon who wrote it? Doesn’t that sit a little differently with you after reading that short passage from 1 Kings? It sure did with me! Let me share some other verses that talk about the virtue of wisdom written by Solomon in Proverbs. I’ve divided it into three sections: obtaining wisdom, revering wisdom, and loving wisdom.

Obtaining Wisdom:

  • “Turn at my [wisdom’s] rebuke; surely I [wisdom] will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you.” —Proverbs 1:23
  • “Yes, if you cry out for discernment, and lift up your voice for understanding, if you seek her [wisdom] as silver, and search for her [wisdom] as for hidden treasures; then you will understand the fear of the Lord.” —Proverbs 2:3-5
  • “For the Lord gives wisdom,” —Proverbs 2:6
  • “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding. Exalt her [wisdom], and she will promote you; she [wisdom] will bring you honor when you embrace her.” —Proverbs 4:7-8
  • “Hear instruction and be wise, and do not disdain it.” —Proverbs 8:33
  • “Forsake foolishness and live, and go in the way of understanding.” —Proverbs 9:6
  • “He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed.” —Proverbs 13:20
  • “The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom,” —Proverbs 15:33
  • “The rod and rebuke give wisdom,” —Proverbs 29:15

Revering Wisdom:

  • “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” —Proverbs 1:7
  • “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths.” —Proverbs 3:5-6
  • “Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and depart from evil.” —Proverbs 3:7
  • “Take firm hold of instruction, do not let go; keep her [wisdom], for she is your life.” —Proverbs 4:13
  • “For wisdom is better than rubies, and all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her [wisdom].” —Proverbs 8:11
  • “The Lord possess me [wisdom] at the beginning of His way, before His works of old. I [wisdom] have been established from everlasting from the beginning, before there was ever an earth.” —Proverbs 8:22-23
  • “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” —Proverbs 9:10

Loving Wisdom:

  • “When wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge is pleasant to your soul, discretion will preserve you; understanding will keep you,” —Proverbs 2:10-11
  • “Happy is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who gains understanding; for her proceeds are better than the profits of silver, and her gain than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies, and all the things you may desire cannot compare with her.” —Proverbs 3:13-15
  • “She [wisdom] will place on your head an ornament of grace; a crown of glory she will deliver to you.” —Proverbs 4:9
  • “I [wisdom] love those who love me [wisdom], and those who seek me diligently will find me.” —Proverbs 8:17
  • “Understanding is a wellspring of life to him who has it.” —Proverbs 16:22
  • “A wise man is strong, yes, a man of knowledge increases strength.” —Proverbs 24:5
  • “Whoever loves wisdom makes his father rejoice,” —Proverbs 29:3

Like stated earlier, there is so much wisdom in the bible. What we read from the bible will give us wisdom, and knowledge, and understanding of the Holy One. Be diligent in seeking wisdom and asking God to provide it to you. I’ll wrap this up with a verse from James regarding wisdom: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him” —James 1:5. Continue reading verse 6 and 7 on your own to be sure you are asking in faith, without doubting.

Be blessed brothers and sisters! May God open up to you this week in wisdom. Obtain it, revere it, and love it. God bless.
